Marylands voting methods are old and outdated.
Join us to bring Modern Voting to Maryland.
"First Past the Post" or plurality voting is antiquated. In America, it comes from the time of slavery, when women were second-class citizens, non-white people were heathens or chattel property, and only rich, white men could vote and hold office.
It's not working for modern society and it's time we start using something new.
There are a number of alternatives to FPTP voting: Ranked Choice Voting, STAR Voting, Approval Voting and more. But the first step to a jurisdiction adopting ANY of these methods in Maryland (whichever one its residents want to use) is the state General Assembly permitting them to use a method different than what other counties in the state use. Per Maryland election law, all jurisdictions (i.e. counties and Baltimore City) must use uniform methods to conduct elections. Read the law requiring this at: Md. Election Law Code Ann. § 8-101.
Instead of arguing over which method is best, Represent Maryland wants to bring all supporters of #AlternativeVoting methods together to get the state to pass the law that allows jurisdictions to use the alternative method of THEIR choice. After all, #AllPoliticsAreLocal.
The Modern Voting Maryland campaign was created to bring together supporters around one goal: Getting the Maryland General Assembly to pass the necessary enabling legislation that will allow a jurisdiction to use an alternative voting method.
